“Low relief” is an artistic term referring to a shallow sculpture on a mostly flat background, and is designed to be seen from only one side. Every day we see examples of very low relief sculpture on the faces of our coins. Sometimes it is also called “bas-relief”, from the French term bas, meaning “low”. Of all the sculptural forms, low relief is the easiest to reproduce, since it does not require complex molds. Another attraction of this format is the fact that it can be readily displayed on a wall, either with or without a frame. Low-relief technique tends to be very delicate, expressive, and intimate in nature.
